You found a .kept file. It is a private copy made by a Kepvela app.
What is a .kept file?
A .kept file holds a photo, document, scan or recording, sealed with strong encryption. The key that opens it is stored in the secure hardware of the phone that made it, so the file is unreadable anywhere else, even if someone copies it.
Inside, a .kept file keeps the original's exact bytes, so opening it gives back the identical file.
How to open one
- Open it with the Kepvela app that made it, on the phone that made it. KepvelaPic makes .kept copies of photos, KepvelaDocs of documents, KepvelaScan of scans and KepvelaAudio of recordings.
- On any other phone or computer, the file cannot be opened. That is how it protects you.
- Uninstalling the app that made a .kept file deletes its key, and the file can no longer be opened. Make a normal copy first if you may need one.
Older .spry and .ward files
Files made by early test versions end in .spry or .ward. The Kepvela apps still open them and upgrade them to .kept automatically.
